Prosthetics

Dental prosthetics are appliances that replace damaged, decayed or missing tooth/teeth. These include dentures, veneers, bridges, crowns, implants, etc. that can be removable or permanently attached in the patient’s mouth. Dr. Brenda Garrison or Dr. Sara Podoll can evaluate the condition of your mouth and prescribe you the right prosthesis for your condition.

Implants

Dental implants constitute metal frames or posts that are surgically placed into the patient’s jawbone beneath the gums so as to fix artificial teeth onto them. Because of the metal posts the artificial teeth have a stable support. Now, the bridges or dentures placed to these implants won’t shift or slip in the mouth.

Bridge

If a patient is missing several teeth, a dental bridge is the most preferred option for them. Bridges are crowns that bridge the gap between missing teeth and are supported by implants or natural teeth on either side. The artificial teeth are known as pontics, while the anchoring teeth are referred to as abutment teeth.

Advantages of bridges include:

  • A simple procedure
  • These are less painful than dental implants as they don’t require surgery.
  • The procedure is fast and may only take as much as a few weeks to complete.

Bridge Vs Implant

Bridges are used to bridge the gap between missing teeth. These are supported by implants or natural teeth on the side and are made up of crowns. There are porcelain or metal wings on the bridge through which the existing teeth on the sides are bonded.

Implants, on the other hand, are metal posts that are surgically positioned into the jawbone to support a crown. These post are first given time to firmly fuse into the patient’s jawbone to provide a strong support for a crown.

Bridges are simple procedures that don’t require surgery. They are much faster than implants and cost less. However, they are not aesthetically pleasing, my need replacement after some time and require the removal of tooth structure of adjacent teeth.

Implants need little maintenance, are more natural-looking than bridges and protect the jawbone from deteriorating. However, they need surgery, a few months of time and cost a lot.

Implant Supported Bridge

This is a dental bridge that is supported by implants rather than natural teeth. Implant-supported bridges are mostly used when several teeth are missing or when dentists feel that there might be too much pressure on implants which aren’t connected.

The process usually involves:

  • Titanium implants are surgically positioned into the jawbone.
  • The abutments, made from gold, titanium or porcelain are screwed onto the titanium posts.
  • The restoration teeth—consisting of bridges of dental crowns—are then attached to the metal structure.

Dentures

Dentures are removable teeth structure used as a replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. According to the patient’s needs, two types of dentures can be used: partial and complete dentures.

Partial dentures are used when a few natural teeth are missing, while complete dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are missing.
